Where Did THAT Wife Come From?
Does it appear that an ancestor was married to one woman when his marriage to his first wife was not dissolved, he wasn't widowed, and there is no record of anything other than a second marriage?
Be not dismayed! Believe it or not, bigamy was not uncommon years ago. This is especially true if your ancestor had a job that required him to travel a great deal. If they went repeatedly to the same city, is wasn't that odd to have a wife in two different cities. So if this is a possibility, check to see if you can find his occupation. If he was a farmer, there is a good chance that there is a mistake somewhere, but if your ancestor was a tin peddler, you might want to give credence to him having two wives.
