George Washington's Replacement
Major General Nathanael Greene had never held a military post until the day he took command of the Rhode Island state troops. Greene first met George Washington shortly thereafter in Boston, where the General was greatly impressed with Greene's military leadership. Less than a year later, Washington believed that Greene was the best of his generals and slated him to take over the Army of the Potomac in the event that Washington was killed.
After the war, Greene moved his family to an estate at Mulberry Grove, Georgia. Where he lived until his death in 1786.
